This specially designed course has been adapted from the HSE Emergency First Aid at Work course to meet the needs of people who work within a school setting.

 

The syllabus includes all content from the one-day Emergency First Aid at Work course and includes additional subjects likely to be faced by first aiders working within a rural school.

 

Class sizes are limited to no more than 8 so as to ensure an optimum learning experience.

When you join this course, you will receive a comprehensive student resource pack.  The pack contains a market leading first aid reference manual that should be used during the class. Learners can keep and use it again as a post course reference.

Who is it for?

 

Anyone who works within a school setting.

 

What will I learn?

 

Rural Cornwall and Devon can be subject to in emergency service attendance, meaning that first aiders must care for a patient for longer.  The course covers the basic essentials required to provide emergency care to a patient including:

 

  • Being able to act safely and effectively when an accident or emergency occurs.
  • Treatment and priorities of care for an unconscious patient.
  • Recognition and treatment of a person in seizure.
  • Recognising cardiac arrest and the delivery of Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Being able to recognise and safely treat a patient who is choking.
  • Safely and promptly treating a patient who is bleeding.
  • Keeping of simple records following an accident at work.

 

and also

 

  • Asthma and the use of inhalers
  • Allergic reaction and the use of Epipens
  • Resuscitation and choking for children

 

Qualification

 

You will be awarded a qualification in Emergency First Aid at Work for Rural Schools, valid for 3 years and certificated by WorkSafe Training Systems.

 

The HSE recommends that all workplace first aiders receive annual refresher training in first aid techniques whilst holding this qualification.

 

What do I need to bring?

 

Photographic identification, such as a driving license or passport.

 

Proof of address, such as a utility bill.

 

Where necessary, proof of current qualifications.  Please contact the Centre for guidance.
