How long is the course?

 

This is a one-day course and includes an integrated assessment.

 

Who is it for?

 

The qualification is aimed at those who use handheld hedge cutters as part of their work, either in horticulture, arboriculture or forestry.

 

What will I learn?

 

This Award in the safe use of Handheld Hedge Cutters includes pre-use checks and maintenance, identification of controls and instruments, and operating the machine to cut hedges to the capacity of the machine.

  • Machine controls and safety features
  • Safe operation
  • Hedge types

 

Qualification

 

NPTC Level 2 Award Safe Use of Handheld Hedge Cutters

 

To demonstrate that you are competent in the safe use of handheld hedge cutters, you will be asked to complete a practical test, including one to one verbal questioning.

 

What do I need to bring?

 

You will need to bring with you your own personal protective equipment (PPE).

 

  • Pen and paper
  • Steel toe-capped boots
  • Tough long-sleeved non-snag work clothing i.e. overalls
  • Gloves with protection to the back of the hand i.e. rigger type
  • Polycarbonate visor, safety glasses/goggles behind a mesh and ear defenders.

 

The use of appropriate hedge cutting machinery is included in the cost of the course. 

 

Photographic identification, such as a driving license or passport.

 

Proof of address, such as a utility bill.

 

Where necessary, proof of current qualifications.  Please contact the Centre for guidance.

 


 

The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 states “It is an offence to intentionally or recklessly take, damage, destroy or interfere with a nest of any wild bird whilst it is in use or being built.”  Therefore we do not run this course between March and August as this is the main nesting season.
