‘Nature’s Prescription is a unique programme which combines outdoor learning with personal health & well-being. It provides a greater awareness of self with the positive benefits of being outdoors whilst enabling a greater understanding of nature, wildlife, woodland, landscape and practical growing.  The programme builds confidence, creates a sense of purpose, helps to provide focus and has a positive effect on both mental and physical health’.


Class size is limited to 10 so as to ensure an optimum learning experience.


As a bonus you will gain part-time City & Guilds level 1 Award in Practical Horticulture course will equip you with some first-class gardening skills. This could provide you with  the opportunity to progress to the City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills and gain employment in grounds and gardens.

Course Details

This programme is unique and well regarded. It is about encouraging people to see the benefits of being outdoors and being surrounded by the natural world and landscape. It is about enabling  learning and the positive effects nature can have on mental & physical health along with the multi-sensory experiences which being outdoors can provide.


How long is the course?


Five weeks. Based on one day per week with your instructor. We will even treat you to a tasty lunch whilst you’re with us.

Your day will start at 9am and finish at 4pm. This means that there will be lots of time to learn in an unhurried manner.


Who is it for?


You should be at least 16 years old. You don’t need any previous experience to enrol on our Nature’s Prescription course, but you do need plenty of enthusiasm and you need to enjoy being outdoors in nature.


What will I learn?


You will learn new skills and be part of a project to grow plants, fruit, and vegetables for yourself and others.  They will learn about the natural world, about landscape, countryside, weather and climate.  Above all you will learn more about yourself , build confidence and develop a sense of purpose. You will gain knowledge that could provide you with a route into employment, and as a bonus, you will also gain a City & Guilds Level 1 Award.

You will complete four core units:

  • Plant container-grown subjects
  • Prepare ground for sowing or planting
  • Prepare soil and apply an organic mulch
  • Water a bed, border or area of plants in containers.

You can then choose from an amazing subject list of optional units to give you eight credits.

What do I need to bring?


For safety reasons, steel toe capped boots are required for these courses.

Photographic identification, such as a driving license or passport. Proof of address, such as a utility bill.

Funding may be available subject to eligibility. You can contact the Centre for further information.


The Centre offers two sizes of qualification: Award and Certificate. This means that we can offer a range of part-time courses that vary in duration from five weeks to four months. Each course will require you to spend one immensely enjoyable day each week in the gardens and greenhouses. You will also have some homework to do in your own time.
